The gentle, ponderous elephants from Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals” are followed by the carefree “Baby Elephant Walk” in a boogie rhythm. And before the listeners know where they are, the theme from “Jurassic Park” reminds them that elephants by no means are the largest creatures that have appeared on earth.
Philharmonix concerts always are as mixed as this. When the seven musicians enter the stage, free interpretations of classical works are mixed with well-known swing pieces, klezmer sounds and Magyar temperament.
“Of course, the way we perform pieces – from whatever genre – is always founded on our education as classical musicians,” explains Daniel Ottensamer, whose ‘day job’ is with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
“But from this base, we move out into all sorts of different areas, and hugely enjoy ploughing our way through many different musical styles.”
